About

Duncan Ibbotson started watercolour painting in 1990 whilst preparing for early retirement from a career in Banking. Whilst on a painting holiday tutored by David Morris and Caroline Metcalfe-Gibson of Ravenstonedale he was introduced to the Open College of the Arts, completing the advanced painting course over a four year period. Watercolours have remained on the agenda, along with oils and acrylics, including metallics.. Drawing is the main ingredient in the preparation of landscapes, flowers, portraits and still life, along with the use of collage.

Some ten years ago Duncan took up pastel painting and for a short time was a pupil of the late master-pastellist, Christopher Assheton-Stones. Since this fruitful acquaintance he has spent most of his time painting landscapes, many featuring water, with this flexible and exciting medium. He uses many different supports and techniques and is attracted to the close contact between hand and surface in applying strong, bright unmixed pigment, a main feature of his pastel painting. He now runs the “Vibrant Pastels” workshops, courses and demonstrations. . His reputation for generosity of knowledge and sincere commitment to his chosen medium is growing amongst the many art societies in the North, from Penrith to Liverpool He is looking forward to leading the second Pastels Summer School at The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal in June of this year.
